Letting Failure Help You Out of your Comfort Zone

Can you believe that my wife hadn’t tried avocadoes, scallops, sweet potatoes, and sushi before I convinced her to? It was crazy to me. Well now these are all her most favorite things. And all it took was convincing her to get out of her dreaded comfort zone.  We all love the control, safety, and security of being in our comfort zone.  Unfortunately, growth and joy our out of the comfort zone.  and these can only be reached by taking risks.  And with taking risks we are bound to fail along the way. However if we want to continue to grow as professionals and make the biggest impact we need to accept failure.

Specifically, don't be afraid to learn a difficult skill & don't be afraid to fail at it.  Be willing to learn new skills even if that skill doesn't fit in your theoretical framework.  Recently, Harrison spoke on why so many PTs DON'T manipulate.  And its not because they don't think it works because they are reading the research.  Higher percentage of PTs agree with it compared to those actually performing it.  Imagine if that was true for brushing your teeth. “97% beleive brushing your teeth is beneficial yet only 30% actually brush their teeth.” GROSS.

Simply, its outside of their comfort zone.  It was for me to. Excuse me, it IS for me too.  It takes time and many resources to improve this one skill.  And each time I failed (with colleagues) I got a better understanding of end feel and how to properly close down the joint without getting near end range.  In addition, I still remember completely forgetting how to MMT the Hip ADD during a practical my first year in DPT school.  But since then I have never forgotten the technique.  When we fail, our emotions get involved.  And our emotions improve our ability to recall tasks! Think of an emotional time, say a first date, you can probably recall much more memory, like location, what he or she was wearing, maybe even smells.  Emotions also improve our sensory “feel”. We can recall more and recall specifics like hand placement and pressure.

Failure builds friction.  And you can't start a fire without friction!
